History

The Great Battle of Poltava is the largest battle of the Great Northern War. It took place on 27 June (8 July) 1709. That was the battle between Russian armies of Peter I and Swedish troops of Charles XII. Charles XII was defeated, 10'000 Swedish soldiers were killed and 3'000 were captured. Rests of Swedish troops capitulated.

Defeat of Swedes by Russians in that battle gave the ground for further way of the Great Northern War. At place of the battle there was found a museum and reserve «The Great Battle Field» – there, on that old field, monuments to Poltava defenders was placed near two monuments to Swedish officers and soldiers; these monuments were erected there in 1909 in honor of bicentenary of the Great Poltava Battle.
